Our Commitment to Accessibility

Lake George Steamboat Company is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for all people, including those with disabilities. We believe everyone should have equal access to information, services, and experiences — both online and at our physical locations on Lake George.

We are actively working to improve the accessibility of our website, lakegeorgesteamboat.com, and to ensure that our vessels, docks, and facilities provide an inclusive experience for all passengers.

Standards We Follow

We aim to conform with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA. These internationally recognized guidelines, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), establish three levels of accessibility measurement (A, AA, and AAA). Level AA is the standard referenced by the U.S. Department of Justice and widely accepted in federal and state courts as the benchmark for accessible web content.

Our website is designed and maintained with the following principles in mind:

  • Perceivable — Information and user interface components are presented in ways that all users can perceive, including text alternatives for images, captions for video, and sufficient color contrast.
  • Operable — All functionality is available via keyboard navigation, and users have adequate time to read and interact with content.
  • Understandable — Information and the operation of the user interface are clear and predictable, with consistent navigation and clear labeling of form elements.
  • Robust — Content is compatible with current and future assistive technologies, including screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver), magnification software, and voice recognition tools.

What We Have Done

To support our accessibility goals, we have conducted an accessibility audit and implemented the following improvements:

  • Improved our heading hierarchy by removing empty heading tags and structuring page content with proper semantic HTML to support screen reader navigation.
  • Fixed color contrast issues on interactive elements, including call-to-action buttons and footer controls, to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA contrast ratios.
  • Made all primary navigation fully operable via keyboard, including adding a “Skip to Main Content” link to allow keyboard and screen reader users to bypass repetitive navigation.
  • Replaced non-descriptive link text (such as “click here” and “text menu here”) with clear, descriptive labels that communicate link destinations to all users.
  • Improved form accessibility by adding descriptive field labels and helper text to our Weddings and Employment inquiry forms.
  • Added a keyboard focus bridge on the Boardwalk Lakefront Deck page to resolve a navigation issue caused by theme-level smooth-scrolling scripts.
  • Removed a hidden newsletter signup form that was generating an accessibility error despite not being visible to users.
  • Provided accessible alternatives for booking and purchasing, including phone-based reservations at (518) 668-5777, ext. 4.

Physical Accessibility

Lake George Steamboat Company operates historic vessels and dockside facilities that were constructed prior to the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act. As grandfathered structures, these facilities were not originally required to meet current ADA Accessibility Guidelines. Nevertheless, Lake George Steamboat Company has voluntarily undertaken significant efforts to retrofit our vessels, docks, and departure facilities to improve accessibility for all guests. These voluntary improvements include accessible ramps, designated accessible seating areas, and accessible restrooms.

Because these are retrofitted historic structures, the level of accessibility may not match that of a facility originally built to current ADA standards. Guests requiring specific accommodations or who wish to discuss their individual needs are encouraged to contact us in advance so we can make every effort to ensure a comfortable experience.

Known Limitations

We recognize that achieving full website accessibility is an ongoing process. Based on our accessibility audits, we are aware of the following areas where our website does not yet fully conform to WCAG 2.2 Level AA:

  • Cruise listing card images — Cruise listing pages (including Special Events and Fireworks Cruises) contain thumbnail images rendered by the Anchor booking system that are missing alternative text (alt text). This is a template-level issue within the Anchor iframe affecting approximately 33 images across two pages. We have contacted Anchor regarding this issue and they have indicated they are unable to resolve it at this time.
  • Heading hierarchy on select pages — The Search Cruises and Gift Cards pages have a heading level skip (H1 to H5) caused by WordPress footer widget output. This does not affect the homepage or most content-rich pages.
  • Third-party booking widget — The Anchor booking system, embedded on our site as an iframe, contains a date picker that may not be fully operable via keyboard alone. Because this widget is controlled by Anchor, we do not have the ability to modify its accessibility directly, but we have raised this with the vendor.
  • Third-party cookie consent widget — The Termly cookie consent banner contains a color contrast issue on its “Cookie Policy” link that is outside our control.
  • Underlined non-link text — Several pages contain underlined text that is not a hyperlink, which may confuse users. These are cosmetic elements from the site design.
  • Noscript content — Some pages contain content that is only visible when JavaScript is disabled, which may have accessibility gaps.

Third-Party Content

Throughout our website, we link to or embed content from third-party platforms, including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, Google Maps, and our Anchor booking system. These services are not operated by Lake George Steamboat Company, and we do not control their accessibility features. We encourage visitors to review the accessibility policies of these platforms:
